About the Role
We're seeking an experienced Counsel to join our GEICO Staff Counsel team in California, working remotely from our vibrant locations in Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. As a Counsel, you will play a critical role in defending lawsuits filed in California courts and other first-party insurance defense matters. Key Responsibilities
- Researching laws and preparing high-quality legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to support case strategy and decision-making.
- Rendering expert opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department, providing critical guidance on case handling and resolution.
- Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath, to effectively manage cases and achieve favorable outcomes.
- Defending cases by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable, and working closely with the Claims Department to ensure seamless case resolution.
- Documenting files in a clear, concise, and professional written manner, ensuring that all case-related information is accurately recorded and easily accessible.
Essential Qualifications
- A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, with a strong academic record and a commitment to ongoing legal education.
- Admission to the California Bar, with a current and active license to practice law in the state.
- 7-9+ years of experience in a related field, with a proven track record of success in civil litigation and insurance defense-related litigation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas and arguments in a clear and persuasive manner.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple cases, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience, with a focus on insurance defense-related litigation.
- A proven track record of success in managing complex cases and achieving favorable outcomes.
- Strong knowledge of California law and procedure, with a commitment to staying up-to-date on the latest developments and trends.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively.

Compensation
The annual salary range for this role is $124,000 - $205,000, depending on your experience, qualifications, and location. We're committed to offering competitive compensation and benefits to our Associates, recognizing the value they bring to our organization.
