Position Overview
The Data Center Engineering Manager will be strategically and operationally responsible for critical infrastructure operations across multiple data center facilities. This role demands a unique blend of technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and operational excellence. The successful candidate will ensure health, safety, and availability while managing costs, assessing and mitigating risks, and maintaining compliance with all regulatory standards.
You'll lead a team of engineering professionals, oversee complex projects, and serve as the subject matter expert for all mechanical, electrical, and control systems within our facilities. This position requires someone who thrives in a high-stakes environment and can balance multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety Leadership: Serve as an ambassador for safety within the team and promote safe work practices across all data center locations. Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies.
- Team Management: Lead and develop a team of Data Center Engineering Operations professionals, including all aspects of people management, performance, scheduling, and technical leadership.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure effective and efficient management of daily Data Center Engineering Operations across all assigned facilities.
- Process Improvement: Manage and improve operational workflows, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies proactively.
- Technical Authority: Act as the subject matter expert in data center mechanical, electrical, and control systems. Provide technical guidance and strategic direction.
- Performance Monitoring: Ensure all operational KPIs and metrics are being measured, tracked, and met consistently. Drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Automation Initiatives: Play a critical role in the development and driving of automation across data center operations to enhance efficiency and reliability.
- Incident Management: Manage large-scale events or outages, including standby rotations and escalation procedures. Serve as the primary point of contact during critical incidents.
- Vendor Management: Perform vendor management for colocation facilities and coordinate daily with third-party vendors to ensure adherence to contracted SLAs.
- Compliance & Quality: Ensure data centers comply with all relevant safety and security policies and procedures. Oversee all aspects of critical physical infrastructure.
- Project Leadership: Participate in ongoing projects, often requiring collaboration with various support teams, and drive initiatives from conception to completion.
- Budget Management: Effectively and efficiently manage operational budgets and expenditures, ensuring cost-effectiveness without compromising quality.
- On-Call Leadership: Regularly serve as the off-hours on-call Data Center Manager for the region, including responding to issues and managing investigation, mitigation, and recovery.
- Event Support: Provide support for weather events, planned outages, and unplanned outages as needed.
- Documentation: Research and write technical documents to drive change and document lessons learned within the business.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline OR equivalent work experience in the Mechanical/Electrical field
- Six (6) years of experience in a management position with five (5) or more direct reports
- Two (2) years of experience managing directors or senior team leads
- Ten (10) years of experience working in critical infrastructure operations
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent understanding of electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations, including feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air-handling units, and CRAC units
- Proven history of successfully managing and developing high-performing teams
- Strong ability to solve problems at their root by stepping back to understand the broader context
- Experience with troubleshooting and problem-solving in complex technical environments
- Ability to maintain SLAs through implementation of proactive issue detection and reporting
- Capacity to follow exact and complete maintenance procedures, system documentation, and issue tracking entries
- Demonstrates excellent judgment and instincts in decision-making
- Ability to prioritize effectively in complex, fast-paced environments
- Proactive and continuous approach to improving knowledge about arenaflex's business and relevant technologies
- Ability to take ownership of issues brought by internal or external clients, including willingness to engage other support teams to drive resolution
- High-level electrical or mechanical certifications (Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline is also acceptable)

Work Environment
You'll be joining a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about keeping our infrastructure running smoothly. Our data centers operate 24/7, so you'll need to be comfortable with the possibility of working flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. The role also requires participation in an on-call rotation to address any urgent issues that may arise outside of standard business hours.
