Job Summary 

 

The Insolvency Counsellor supports clients in their financial recovery by assessing their needs and providing tools and knowledge through mandated counselling sessions. This role is responsible for delivering insolvency counselling in accordance with the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA), helping clients understand financial management, credit rebuilding, and long-term financial wellness. The role requires strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to manage a high volume of client sessions while maintaining compliance and documentation standards 

 

Key Accountabilities 

 

Accountability 1: Insolvency Counselling 

  • Build trust and rapport with clients through phone and video counselling sessions. 

  • Deliver BIA-mandated financial counselling to support client rehabilitation. 

  • Conduct first counselling session focused on money management, spending habits, and financial warning signs. 

  • Conduct second counselling session focused on financial goal setting, credit use, and rebuilding credit. 

  • Evaluate client needs and provide referrals to external resources when necessary. 

  • Maintain a daily caseload of at least 8 counselling sessions. 

  • Schedule and manage second counselling sessions. 

  • E-file all required documentation in a timely and accurate manner. 

 

Accountability 2: Compliance & Documentation 

  • Ensure adherence to internal policies, procedures, and best practices. 

  • Align counselling practices with OSB and CAIRP ethical and professional standards. 

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with BIA requirements. 

  • Professional Development requirement (OSB Directive 1R8 par. 28), 3.5 h every two years 

 

Accountability 3: Collaboration & Client Support 

  • Provide counselling services across all provinces serviced by B+S. 

  • Collaborate with Financial Wellness Partners and other team members to support client outcomes. 

  • Promote BSI’s culture, values, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

 

This job may also be required to complete other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience 

 

 

Education 

 

Minimum required level of education and technical professional qualifications, licenses, or certifications/designations: 

  • Secondary school (high school or equivalent) plus either 30 credit hours or post-secondary coursework in a degree/diploma program, or 3 years of relevant work experience supporting and LIT or registered BIA counsellor 

  • Completion of CAIRP’s Practical Course on Insolvency Counselling (PCIC) 

  • Minimum of 50counselling sessions delivered, under supervision 

Preferred level of education and specialty/discipline: 

  • Post-Secondary Diploma in a related field. 

 

 

Experience         

Minimum number  

of years required: 

  • 2–3 years 

Preferred type/area of experience or other specifics: 

  • Experience as an Insolvency Counsellor. 

  • Experience with insolvency software and procedures. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new systems.  

  • Strong presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to manage a structured workload and meet daily counselling targets. 

  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
