They are seeking a Director of Marketing & Communications to elevate their brand, implement marketing strategies, and lead a communications team focused on promoting civic engagement and education.
Responsibilities
- Architect and oversee a comprehensive, multi-channel marketing and communications strategy that elevates GC’s brand and drives engagement, aligning with our student-centered, pro-democracy mission
- Define the strategic vision for national content; empower and supervise the team, at national and regional levels, to execute high-impact newsletters, impact reports, and campaigns
- Manage and refine GC’s national brand strategy, ensuring consistency while allowing for regional nuance
- Leverage data and analytics to drive digital marketing growth, moving from basic reporting to audience-focused optimization
- Set the roadmap for our digital presence, overseeing website architecture and managing partnerships with external agencies and vendors
- Define the strategic PR roadmap; proactively position GC leaders as thought authorities through op-eds, media placements, and high-impact speaking engagements
- Direct the team and outside firms in building and maintaining relationships with key media outlets, journalists, and influencers
- Ensure our visual and written narrative is cohesive, impactful, and authentic to the diverse communities we serve
- Leverage GC’s communication channels to influence district leaders, policymakers, and fundraisers to prioritize student-led, project-based civics
- Develop and deploy digital assets (preformatted templates, graphics, newsletters) to amplify GC’s impact during signature events, impact webinars, legislative sessions, and Civics Day experiences
- Lead daily content creation, including writing copy for newsletters, reports, and digital campaigns, and producing visual assets
- Establish directional priorities for, and supervise the social media manager’s creation of the content calendar and digital community engagement
- Manage GC’s day-to-day editorial calendar, ensuring all content is produced, scheduled, and published on time
- Drive end-to-end project management, tracking all key deliverables, coordinating cross-functional inputs, and ensuring deadlines are met for all communication workstreams
- Manage the creation of marketing materials for fundraising and school partnership recruitment, collaborating across GC’s national and regional teams, and overseeing internal staff or outside consultants as needed
- Engineer the systems, communication workflows, and infrastructure that allow a distributed team to operate with speed and clarity
- Drive organizational alignment on GC’s brand strategy and ensure its effective implementation across all regional sites
- Foster an internal culture of storytelling; build and manage equity-centered training resources that elevate staff expertise across the organization
- Establish and enforce internal policies for social media, brand usage, and external affairs to maintain organizational integrity and agility
- Lead, mentor, and coach the communications team, specifically supervising a Social Media Manager and a seasonal communications intern
- Provide clear guidance and delegate tactical components of social media to direct reports, while remaining personally involved in high-impact content creation and narrative development
- Foster a collaborative environment that balances high-level strategy with tactical excellence, setting clear performance goals, providing regular feedback, and actively managing professional development
Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a communications-focused role (organization or agency), showing progressive responsibility, success in scaling infrastructure/systems, and strategic execution in non-profit, government, or mission-based contexts
- Experience managing at least one direct report for at least one year
- Demonstrated capacity to communicate public policy information to non-specialist audiences
- Demonstrated outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including the ability to prepare materials across diverse media, audiences, and channels
- Proficient in developing and editing compelling materials; expertise in technology platforms such as Google Docs/Sheets, Canva, Hootsuite, and social media tools
- Proven track record of executing communications tasks with high autonomy, ranging from content design and copy editing to CMS management
- Ability to problem-solve, manage multiple work streams, and maintain strong, process-oriented systems in a fast-paced environment
- Strong relationship-builder and empathetic listener, with the ability to provide/receive direct, supportive feedback to connect, engage, and inspire others
- Highly collaborative spirit with a focus on project management, ownership of outcomes, and the ability to work effectively both individually and through others
- A deep commitment to Generation Citizen's mission and passion for impactful storytelling that respects the diversity of our communities, with particular attention to the nuances of representation
