Job Overview
As a Remote Health Information Coder III - Emergency Department Coding Specialist, you will be responsible for assigning ICD and CPT/HCPCS codes for patients receiving emergency department services at UCSD Health System. Your expertise will ensure accurate coding, compliance with Official Coding Guidelines, and optimal APC level assignment through our encoder. You'll also be responsible for assigning facility and professional ED E/M level, infusion/injection, and additional bedside procedure charging, as well as reviewing and updating abstracting data for quality patient care, outcome analysis, and financial management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assign ICD and CPT/HCPCS codes for emergency department services based on documentation and Official Coding Guidelines.
- Generate accurate APC level assignments through the encoder.
- Assign facility and professional ED E/M level, infusion/injection, and additional bedside procedure charging.
- Review and update abstracting data for quality patient care, outcome analysis, and financial management.
- Perform data entry into electronic databases.
- Stay up-to-date with coding guidelines, regulations, and industry developments.
Qualifications and Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of experience in an acute care setting with RHIT/RHIA/CCS certification or be exam-eligible to test and credential within 6 months of hire.
- Proven skill with computers and computer systems.
- Coding experience with inpatient/outpatient surgery/emergency room records.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Epic and 3M 360 CAC experience.
- Trauma level I experience.
- Academic Facility Coding experience.
- 2 years of coding and charging experience with emergency room records, performing facility and professional ED E/M leveling, injections/infusions.
- CCS certification highly preferred.
- Emergency Department facility charging experience.

Compensation and Benefits:
Our compensation package is designed to attract and retain top talent. The Annual Full Pay Range for this position is $86,130 - $107,094, prorated based on appointment percentage. We're committed to providing a comprehensive benefits package that supports the well-being of our employees.
