In preparation for its next ambitious campaign, the Division of Institutional Advancement (IA) seeks to strengthen the bonds with the university's many constituencies. By working together, we will secure the financial resources necessary to continue the legacy of excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship at Brandeis.
Located nine-miles west of downtown Boston, a global hub for higher education and innovation, Brandeis University is accessible via major highways (I-90 and I-95) and the MBTA Brandeis/Roberts commuter rail stop. This position is also hybrid eligible.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Director of Development, A&S/GSAS will serve as lead for advancement work to strengthen the core of Brandeis University. Serve as a critical strategic partner to both Deans to connect with faculty and alumni to create and offer significant philanthropic opportunities. Maximize the effectiveness of the Deans? philanthropic efforts. Collaborate closely with, and take direction from, the University Institutional Advancement Office regarding funding strategy, stewardship and donor relations, prospect management, and gift processing. Develop timelines and strategic moves; ensure appropriate, timely follow up with identified prospects while maintaining strong relationships with the Arts & Sciences Division Heads, senior leadership, and faculty.
Strategy, Development and Execution:
- Serve as key strategic partner with the A&S and GSAS Deans responsible for building a strategy to promote a culture of philanthropy.
- Manage overall coordination of efforts and resources between A&S and GSAS and IA to ensure alignment, progress and celebration of key milestones and successes.
- Partner with development colleagues on strategy to leverage broad-based direct marketing to support school priorities and development objectives.
- Leverage alumni relations colleagues to develop engagement strategies to strengthen alumni connectivity.
- Collaborate with both Deans, and their senior leadership team, to build this strategy and implement it over agreed upon timeframes with specific goals and deliverables.
- Assist Deans in working with senior leadership, division heads, chairs, and other faculty to identify high-impact funding priorities and to develop and craft proposals, reports, and briefings, as appropriate.
- Manage Dean's time related to development, stewardship, and prospect work.
- Manage a portfolio of key A&S/GSAS prospects (roughly 75 assignments)
- Collaborate with IA development colleagues on shared strategies to impact key A&S/GSAS funding priorities
- Support the Deans in collaborating with faculty, especially chairs and senior leadership, to brainstorm high-impact giving opportunities, identify prospects.
- Support the Deans in collaborating with faculty to make IA-approved asks to alumni for whom faculty are the closest connection to Brandeis.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant work experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
- Track record of cultivating and closing six and seven figure gifts and working as part of a collaborative team to accomplish this.
- Strong relational, collaborative and teamwork skills for both internal and external relations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and operationalize related fundraising and engagement strategies, switching strategies when needed.
- Successful experience engaging with faculty/leadership.

- Demonstrates proficiency in email, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and conferencing software, and relational databases with an ability to become comfortable and productive with the University's alumni and donor systems. MS Office Suite and Salesforce experience highly desired.
- Exhibits excellent written and oral communication skills that promote academic and business professionalism and convey information clearly and concisely.
- Presents a collegial, collaborative, and customer-service demeanor that positively reflects the core values and standards of the institution and demonstrates tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to successfully interact and collaborate with varied constituencies and at all times represents Brandeis University in an exemplary and professional manner.
- Ability to apply sound judgment, discretion, and a commitment to professional ethics, data security and nondisclosure when dealing with highly confidential constituent, donor, and prospect information.
- Adheres to University and departmental business policies and procedures.
- Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail and follow-up.
- Self-motivated with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Must be able and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends with an attitude of doing what it takes to get the job done.
- Must be able and willing to travel frequently throughout the United States and international regions, as needed, to attend events and meet with prospects and donors to further cultivation and solicitation strategies.
