The Cyclone Team Opportunity
We're looking for a talented Senior Data Engineer to join our Cyclone Team — a dynamic multi-product engineering group within Roundel, arenaflex's Digital Media Marketing division. As a core data platform team, we focus on the curation and optimization of data assets used by our Marketing teams to deliver personalized campaigns to arenaflex's visitors across multiple channels including web, email, and social platforms.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a critical piece of arenaflex's advertising technology infrastructure, where you'll be responsible for building and maintaining data pipelines that power campaign delivery and performance reporting for millions of daily impressions.
What You'll Do
As a Senior Data Engineer at arenaflex, you'll take a leadership role in designing, building, and maintaining our data infrastructure. You'll act as an expert within the engineering team, helping to shape application architecture and translate complex engineering concepts into concrete designs that impact system performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technology Innovation: Apply and maintain knowledge of current and emerging technologies within your area of expertise. Evaluate new technologies and participate in decision-making processes, considering factors such as feasibility within arenaflex's technical environment, viability, and total cost of ownership.
- Research & Development: Initiate and execute research and proof-of-concept activities for new technologies and approaches to data engineering.
- Technical Leadership: In complex and unstructured situations, act as a subject matter expert to create and improve standards and best practices, ensuring high performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure deliverables.
- Architecture & Design: Lead the design, lifecycle management, and total cost of responsibility for data pipelines and platform components. Lead code reviews, design reviews, testing, and debugging activities at the application level.
- System Understanding: Lead functional design and architecture discussions with a deep understanding of process flows and system diagrams to enable informed design decisions.
- Development & Automation: Participate in routine and non-routine development, automation, and deployment activities, ensuring successful execution while meeting design and operational requirements and best practices.
- Mentorship: Provide technical oversight and mentor others to resolve complex and critical technical issues. Help junior engineers grow their skills and expertise.
- Disaster Recovery: Lead disaster recovery activities and contribute to disaster recovery planning efforts to ensure business continuity.
- Data Quality: Install and maintain data quality protocols throughout data acquisition, processing, storage, and operational use to ensure data integrity across the platform.
What We're Looking For
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of experience in application and data pipeline development
- 5+ years of experience working with large volumes and variety of data in a production environment
- 5+ years of experience working with Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, Apache Spark, Spark Streaming, Oozie, and Hive
- Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Scala, Python, or Java
- Proficiency in at least one of the following monitoring tools: Kibana or Grafana
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high-performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure deliverables with broad impact (high throughput and low latency)
- Strong ability to influence and apply high data standards, methods, and techniques
- Experience writing and organizing code using multiple scripts, including distributed programming with understanding of various frameworks and principles
- Solid foundational computer science knowledge including skills working with design patterns, data structures, and algorithms
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities with understanding of the impact of own work on the team and colleagues
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in performance tuning data pipelines and data platforms
- Experience in automated testing and various testing frameworks (e.g., JUnit)
- Experience integrating with REST APIs and cloud technologies (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services)
- Knowledge of streaming solutions (e.g., Kafka)
- Exposure to containerization (e.g., Docker)
- Exposure to DevOps tools, processes, and culture (e.g., Drone, Jenkins, Git)
- Experience working with a source control tool (e.g., Git)
- Familiarity with Agile concepts and methodologies
