Job Overview
As a Senior Instructional Assistant - Sign Language, you will play a vital role in our Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, working closely with teachers and students to provide individualized instruction, support, and guidance. Key Responsibilities
- Provide individualized instruction and support to deaf and hard of hearing students, using total communication skills (e.g., sign language) to translate and interpret written and spoken educational information or instructions.
- Work with students individually or in small groups to tutor, reinforce, or follow up on learning activities, adapting instruction to meet the diverse needs of each student.
- Assist students in learning oral speech patterns, producing sounds, words, and sentences, and help them relate to individuals and groups in the mainstream environment.
- Guide students in developing self-reliance, advocating for their needs, and promoting independence in academic, personal, and social areas.
- Collaborate with teachers to establish and maintain a clean, safe, and pleasant classroom and learning environment, ensuring that all students have access to the resources and support they need to succeed.
- Assist with supervision of classroom, outdoor playground, and field trip activities, directing students into safe activities and relationships, and maintaining a positive and respectful atmosphere.
- Participate in the development and implementation of individual or site crisis management plans, ensuring that all students receive the support and care they need in times of crisis.
- Perform routine clerical tasks related to student records and instructional activities, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records, and providing administrative support as needed.
Essential Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Three months of paid or volunteer experience working with people who can communicate or be communicated with only through sign language, or one specialized course in sign language.
- Ability to use total communication (e.g., sign language) continuously while performing tasks, and to understand and follow instructional and assessment protocol.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate students to participate in learning activities, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, and staff.
- Knowledge of practical learning patterns and behavior, basic characteristics of human behavior, elementary concepts of child development and behavior, and basic communication skills.
- Ability to recognize and report safety hazards, maintain confidentiality of student information, and operate computer technology and office equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an educational setting, preferably with deaf and hard of hearing students.
- Advanced skills in sign language, with the ability to interpret and translate complex educational information.
- Knowledge of laws, rules, practices, and procedures related to the education program, including recognition and reporting requirements for suspected child abuse.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with a strong commitment to collaboration, flexibility, and adaptability.
