Opportunity

Longy School of Music of Bard College seeks qualified candidates for part-time faculty positions in our fully online Master of Music in Music Education (MM/ME).

    Longy seeks Faculty with the expertise to develop and teach two new courses:
  • Music and Music Education and AI
  • Music Education andEntrepreneurship

In addition, Longy seeks qualified candidates to teach the El Sistema in Music Education course.

Position Description

Designed to be accessible to any music educator, anywhere, the Online MM/ME fuses music education with social change, culturally relevant teaching practices, and student agency. Faculty in this program teach asynchronously to a global adult student population using Longy's learning management system.

Longy faculty demonstrate the commitment to preparing music educators to be transformative leaders wherever they teach and have the technical savvy to design and teach online in inspirational ways. Faculty are adept at responding to the needs of learners from a variety of educational backgrounds in a multicultural environment. They are imaginative about using online formats in new ways to encourage student engagement and active participation.

    Responsibilities
  • Develop and design one asynchronous, online music teacher education course for full online delivery, including structured weekly modules with asynchronous formative and summative assessments, discussion forums, and reflective blog-based assignments.
  • Use Longy's learning management system to post syllabus,assignmentsand other materials, and communicate with students.
  • Facilitate asynchronous, online learning, including leading and moderating online discussions of course material via discussion posts and web chats.
  • Host one weekly Zoom course meeting each week for students.
  • Evaluate and select texts and instructional materials.
  • Create and record instructional lectures and videos that will be posted within assigned coursework for asynchronous student access.
  • Participatein professional development seminarspertaining toonline course development and delivery.
  • Submit developed online courses for review and approval to theAssistant Dean of Teacher Education.
  • Evaluate student papers, projects,tests,and other assessments.
  • Edit and refresh course content as needed, to adaptto the developmentofnew technologiesand software.
  • Participate inweekly,scheduled online virtual office hours with students.
  • Respond to student inquiriesin a timely manner(within 24 hours).
    Skills and Knowledge Required
  • Excellent computer skills andfacilitywith multiple types of operating systems, peripheral accessories, and software programs; familiarity with Brightspace learning managementsystemis a plus.
  • A deep understanding of culturally responsive pedagogy and its application in the preK-12 music education setting
  • Ability to deliver course outcomes and content asynchronously through a variety of teaching/learning styles
  • Respect for students and a genuine interest in their learning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Good organizational skills and timeliness in responding to student inquiries.
  • Ability toestablishand maintain effective interpersonal relationships with students and colleagues.
    Qualifications
  • Master's Degreein Music Education, or a related fieldpreferred
  • Prior teaching experience in a graduate or undergraduate program or corporate training program, particularly to adult students, is preferred
  • Prior experience teaching in a fully onlinesetting with evidence of positive student outcomes.
