Position Overview

The Principal Engineer – Data Analytics & Data Science holds a pivotal and influential position at arenaflex, directing the essential vision, strategy, and engineering of the organization's data investigation and reporting landscape. In this capacity, you will be instrumental in shaping the long-term technical strategy, embracing innovation, and providing hands-on experience as a technical leader for the team. You will drive analysis for emerging industry trends and provide ongoing guidance to bring initiatives to completion. This role demands a dynamic approach, blending direct technical leadership, mentorship, and active participation in risk and innovation management.

Key Responsibilities


  • Team Leadership & Mentorship: Lead and coach a team of engineers, provide technical direction, share best practices, and foster a culture of continuous learning and development. Mentor junior team members and cultivate talent across the organization.

  • Technical Excellence: Adhere to and drive modern programming practices through design reviews. Manage system design through defined interfaces across different components, code reviews, using data and telemetry to inform decisions.

  • Architecture & Engineering: Develop "top-tier" engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, easily monitored, and reusable.

  • Quality Assurance: Improve test coverage for services; organize and implement integration tests; and resolve trouble spots. Ensure testability, compactness, monitoring, reliability, and feasibility; and understand when code is ready to be shared and deployed.

  • Data-Driven Approach: Focus on business needs through a data-driven approach. Investigate and improve automation, reliability, and monitoring for distributed products.

  • Strategic Vision: Set the strategic vision for data analysis and reporting, aligning with organizational goals. Provide leadership in guiding the overall direction of data analytics technical initiatives.

  • Data Model Development: Plan, develop, and optimize complex data models and reporting structures. Drive the design and implementation of scalable and efficient data analysis and reporting frameworks.

  • Data Integrity & Security: Ensure the integrity, security, and performance of data products and reporting solutions by partnering with platforms, data architecture, and governance teams.

  • Technology Strategy: Define and implement the long-term technical strategy for data analysis, incorporating emerging technologies and industry trends. Stay current with emerging technologies and evaluate their applicability to the organization.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, business analysts, data engineers, platform engineers, and IT professionals, to develop comprehensive data solutions.

  • Knowledge Sharing: Foster a collaborative environment that encourages knowledge sharing and skill development. Lead technical leadership gatherings, learning sessions for the engineering community throughout the organization.

  • Data Quality Standards: Establish and maintain data quality standards and best practices. Implement processes for data validation, cleansing, and accuracy.

  • Tool Evaluation: Evaluate and select appropriate data analysis and reporting tools to meet business needs. Lead requirement meetings and partner closely with platforms and infrastructure teams during the evaluation and implementation of these tools.

  • Documentation: Partner with engineering and development teams to create and maintain documentation for data analysis processes, reporting frameworks, and data models.

  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor the performance of data analysis and reporting systems; and provide technical leadership to drive security and scalability of data products and reporting solutions.

  • Strategic Insights: Provide strategic insights and recommendations based on data analysis to support decision-making at the organizational level. Recommend infrastructure upgrades to support business growth and evolving technology requirements.

  • Cloud Technologies: Utilize cloud services, such as Azure SQL DW (Synapse), ADLS, Azure Event Hub, Cosmos DB, Databricks, Delta-Lake to enhance and accelerate delivery of our data products and services.

  • Big Data Solutions: Implement big data and NoSQL solutions by developing scalable data processing platforms to drive high-value insights to the organization.

Required Qualifications & Experience


  • Demonstrated history with a minimum of 15+ years of hands-on experience in data analysis and reporting roles, with progressive responsibility and increasing scope.

  • 5+ years of experience in leadership or senior roles demonstrating the ability to effectively guide and lead a team of technical professionals.

  • 5+ years of experience working with cloud technologies, including ADLS, Azure Databricks, Spark, Azure Synapse, Cosmos DB, DBT, and other big data technologies.

  • Advanced proficiency in data analysis tools, languages, machine learning, and frameworks, including languages such as SQL, Python, R, and visualization platforms.

  • Expertise in data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms to effectively communicate insights to stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud to architect and implement scalable and efficient data analysis solutions.

  • In-depth understanding and practical application of Lakehouse architecture principles, combining the best of data lakes and data warehouses for powerful and flexible data management.

  • Advanced SQL skills with a strong understanding of relational databases and business data capacity to write complex SQL queries against various data sources.

  • Experience managing high-volume and high-speed data streams, and designing systems that can handle the demands of real-time or near-real-time analysis.

  • Experience in shaping the strategic vision for data analysis and reporting initiatives within an organization, with a track record of successful implementation.

  • Proven track record of managing data analysis projects, including planning, execution, and delivery within scope and timeline.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, adapt to emerging technologies, and implement industry best practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to assume ownership and responsibility of critical issues and see them through to resolution.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills with the ability to approach complex challenges methodically.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's or Graduate degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Data Science, or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.

  • Relevant industry certifications in data engineering, cloud platforms, or data analytics are considered a strong advantage.

  • Experience in retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, or supply chain industries, with understanding of industry-specific data challenges and opportunities.

  • Experience with modern data engineering practices including CI/CD for data pipelines, infrastructure as code, and containerization technologies.

  • Familiarity with machine learning operations (MLOps) and deploying models into production environments.

  • Base Salary Range: $160,000 – $230,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
