The Fraunhofer IEG conducts research in the fields of integrated energy infrastructures, geothermal energy, and sector coupling to support a successful energy transition. Our research institution performs applied research, develops innovative technologies for public and industrial clients, and transfers these into market-ready products and processes.
As part of the research project V2Xplore, this master’s thesis aims to develop a methodology for deriving representative distribution grid models (“typical grids”) for Germany based on publicly available data from medium- and low-voltage power networks. The objective is to reduce the computational effort of grid simulations while enabling meaningful analyses of the impacts of Vehicle-to-X (V2X) applications on a national scale. The thesis offers the opportunity to work on independent modeling tasks while being integrated into an interdisciplinary research team.
The position is based at the Aachen site, with the option to work remotely within Germany.
Be part of change
Analysis of publicly available data in the context of electrical energy systems
Development of a methodology to derive typical grids for Germany, e.g., using clustering approaches
Execution of forward-looking distribution grid analyses, considering the expansion of renewable energy sources and the market ramp-up of electric vehicles
Derivation and evaluation of the impacts of V2X applications based on the developed grid models and analyses
What you contribute
Ongoing university studies in Electrical Engineering/Information Technology, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
Knowledge of electrical energy systems or willingness to familiarize yourself with this field
Interest in data analysis and processing, as well as in combining heterogeneous data sources
Good German and very good English language skills (written and spoken)
Solid programming skills in Python
Structured, independent, and reliable way of working
What we offer
Opportunity to contribute your own ideas and actively shape research topics
Scientific supervision and individual support by experienced researchers
Integration into ongoing research projects and current research questions
Workplace at the Aachen site with the option for remote work within Germany
