Position Overview: Business Data Scientist – Impact Measurement
We are currently seeking a talented and motivated Business Data Scientist to join our Impact Measurement team within the Business Strategy and Operations group. This is a unique opportunity to play a critical role in helping arenaflex make data-driven decisions that shape the future of our products and services. As a Business Data Scientist at arenaflex, you will be the voice of data, translating complex questions into actionable insights that drive business value.
In this role, you will work at the intersection of data science, business strategy, and product development. You will be responsible for designing and conducting research that answers key business questions, presenting your findings to executive leadership and cross-functional partners, and helping to build a culture of data-driven decision-making throughout the organization. This position offers significant visibility and the opportunity to influence strategic priorities across the company.
What You'll Do
As a Business Data Scientist on our Impact Measurement team, you will be tasked with supporting arenaflex in making better decisions through rigorous data analysis and causal inference. Your work will directly inform business strategy, product development, and operational priorities. Here's what you can expect to be doing:
- Design and Lead Research: You will design and lead informal research studies with the clear goal of answering business questions. This includes formulating research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, and ensuring that findings are actionable and aligned with business objectives.
- Translate Business Questions: You will take vague or complex business questions and translate them into concrete, answerable data questions. This requires a deep understanding of both the business context and available data sources.
- Extract and Analyze Data: You will pull data from large datasets using SQL and apply statistical analysis techniques using tools such as R, SAS, Stata, or MATLAB to answer research questions.
- Present Insights: You will present and communicate actionable insights and recommendations to executives, business leaders, and cross-functional partners. You must be able to translate technical findings into clear, compelling narratives that drive decision-making.
- Peer Review: You will serve as a peer-reviewer and representative for causal research designed by other teams, helping to ensure the quality and rigor of analysis across the organization.
- Stay Current: You will stay updated with advances in the causal inference literature and develop new techniques when appropriate, continuously improving our analytical capabilities.
- Communicate Uncertainty: You will be transparent about uncertainty and the assumptions used in your analysis, helping decision-makers understand the limitations and confidence levels of your findings.
Who We're Looking For
Minimum Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Applied Data Science, Machine Learning, or equivalent practical experience. We value diverse educational backgrounds and will consider candidates with equivalent experience in related fields.
- Experience with articulating business and product questions and pulling data from datasets using SQL. You should be comfortable writing complex queries and working with large relational databases.
- Experience with statistical tools such as R, SAS, Stata, or MATLAB. You should have a strong foundation in statistical analysis and be able to apply appropriate techniques to different business questions.
- Internship or professional experience with data analysis. We are looking for candidates who have applied their analytical skills in real-world business contexts.
- The ability to communicate findings to non-technical audiences while being transparent about uncertainty and assumptions.
Preferred Qualifications
If you have any of the following, you'll be even better positioned to succeed in this role:
- Experience with Bayesian hierarchical models, Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART), Bayesian Causal Forest (BCF), Gaussian Processes, and Synthetic Control techniques. These advanced methods are particularly valuable for our impact measurement work.
- Experience designing and studying randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Understanding of experimental design and causal inference is crucial for this role.
- Experience designing and studying causal research using observational data. Many of our research questions involve understanding causal relationships without the benefit of controlled experiments.
- Experience with statistical data analysis including linear models, multivariate analysis, stochastic models, and sampling techniques. A strong foundation in these methods is essential for rigorous business research.
- Experience in the media, technology, or entertainment industries. While not required, familiarity with these sectors can help you hit the ground running.
Skills and Competencies
Beyond formal qualifications, we are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Analytical Thinking: The ability to approach complex problems systematically, breaking them down into manageable components and identifying the most appropriate analytical approaches.
- Business Acumen: An understanding of how businesses operate and the ability to connect data insights to business value and strategic objectives.
- Communication Skills: The ability to translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders. You should be comfortable presenting to senior leadership.
- Curiosity: A passion for exploring data and uncovering insights that can drive meaningful business impact.
- Collaboration: The ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and build relationships across the organization.
- Self-Direction: The ability to manage your own work, prioritize tasks, and deliver high-quality results with minimal supervision.
