Position Overview
As a Senior Game Tools Engineer at arenaflex, you will play a critical role in supporting our development teams across all disciplines. You will be responsible for identifying workflow inefficiencies, designing and implementing robust tools solutions, and ensuring our teams have the resources they need to create exceptional games efficiently. This position requires a unique blend of technical expertise, creative problem-solving skills, and a genuine desire to empower your colleagues to achieve their best work.
You will work closely with our Art, Design, and Engineering groups to understand their challenges, propose innovative solutions, and bring those solutions to life. Your contributions will directly impact our team's productivity, creativity, and overall success in delivering high-quality gaming experiences to our players.
Key Responsibilities
- Proactively identify development inefficiencies across all disciplines and elaborate on areas for improvement in our game development pipeline, ensuring smooth workflows throughout the entire production process
- Analyze and understand workflow pain points by collaborating with cross-functional teams including artists, designers, and engineers to identify bottlenecks and areas where custom tools can make the biggest impact
- Design, develop, and implement custom tools that address specific team needs, from asset management systems to automation scripts that streamline repetitive tasks
- Maintain, extend, and support existing development tools including our proprietary engine-specific tools and custom solutions that our teams rely on daily
- Build and guide custom asset pipelines that optimize the flow of assets from concept to final implementation, ensuring consistency and efficiency across all projects
- Develop Spry Fox's proprietary libraries, tools, and technologies across multiple game engines and frameworks, creating reusable solutions that benefit multiple teams and projects
- Collaborate with team members to generate candidate solutions for identified problems, weighing trade-offs given the specific context and development timeline of each initiative
- Implement selected solutions and provide comprehensive support during adoption, including documentation, training, and ongoing refinement based on user feedback
- Evaluate tool effectiveness through metrics and user feedback, continuously iterating to improve solutions and maximize value to the development team
- Assist in the development and maintenance of arenaflex's current set of engine-specific and custom tools that we use every day in our development process
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to best practices for tools development within the engineering organization
- Mentor junior team members and foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the tools engineering team
Essential Qualifications

- Proven experience with the full software development lifecycle: from identifying problems and analyzing potential solutions to implementing tools and evaluating their effectiveness in real-world production environments
- Experience developing tools for multiple game development disciplines including art pipelines, design workflows, and engineering processes
- Strong proficiency in C#, C++, and Python with the ability to choose the right tool for the right job
- Experience working with custom standalone tools and understanding the unique challenges of building tools for non-technical end users
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a self-directed environment with minimal supervision, managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear requirements and documentation for diverse audiences
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a creative approach to finding innovative solutions to complex challenges
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in game development, tools engineering, or related technical roles
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with custom game engines and deep understanding of engine architecture and systems
- Professional experience with Unreal Engine or Unity including editor scripting, plugin development, and custom tool creation within these engines
- JavaScript and .NET technology experience for web-based tools and editor extensions
- Experience with version control systems such as Perforce, Git, or Plastic SCM in a professional development environment
- Background in technical art or pipeline engineering with understanding of asset formats, compression, and optimization workflows
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies and experience working in Scrum or similar frameworks
- Knowledge of data formats such as JSON, XML, YAML, and binary formats commonly used in game development
- Experience with automation and CI/CD pipelines for game development workflows
