About the Role

As a Distributed Systems Engineer at arenaflex, you will play a critical role in architecting and building the robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure that powers our global streaming platform. You will work on real business needs at massive scale by applying your programming and analytical problem-solving skills. This is an exceptional opportunity to work on some of the most interesting and challenging problems in the industry—working with data at petabyte scale, building features and performance improvements, and contributing to open-source communities.

Focus Areas Available:

• Database Access Platform: The Database Access Platform team builds and operates a flexible query gateway that facilitates data abstractions to work at sub-millisecond latencies while allowing arenaflex microservices to more efficiently store, consume, and manage their data. This team holds significant responsibility in enabling arenaflex microservices to meet their constantly growing and evolving data needs. We are passionate about distributed data systems technology, active in the open-source community, and believe in owning what we build. We are a small team responsible for business-critical systems and are committed to a culture of feedback and engineering excellence.
• Data Platform Infrastructure: The Data Platform Infrastructure team serves as a platform for our internal data platforms. Our shared infrastructure and tooling enable arenaflex to quickly iterate on providing cutting-edge data and analytics systems to the rest of the organization without building customized platforms for each new system. To achieve this, we create high-impact infrastructure, control, and deployment systems customized for the needs of running our data systems at scale. Many of our tools and systems are written in Python, making this an excellent team if you enjoy working in multiple languages.
• Data Development and Processing: This team offers a self-service pipeline product to enable varied client personas across arenaflex to meet their low-latency data development and processing requirements. They enable abstraction over complex streaming systems like Kafka and Flink, offer a graph-driven processing experience, and invest in operational automation, reliability, and tools for predictable data quality.
• Big Data Compute: Responsible for providing the cloud-native platform for distributed data processing at arenaflex. This team is critical to batch data processing in Data Stage. It offers support for Spark, to ETL information into the petabyte-scale data warehouse and access that data using Spark and Presto/Trino. It also provides sub-second latency for a specific class of queries using Druid. We are looking for exceptional talent with experience in Spark, Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg, and distributed database systems overall.
• Big Data Orchestration: Offers the platform for scheduling, organizing, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner. These platforms include core services that have all ETL and ML workloads running on Big Data Systems at arenaflex. These fully distributed systems are constantly evolving at arenaflex scale with cutting-edge technology. We are moving toward event-driven and intelligent orchestration that would require minimal client input and intervention.

What You Will Do

• Solve real business needs at massive scale by applying programming and analytical problem-solving skills


• Architect and build robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure


• Design and develop RESTful web services that power critical business functions


• Build and operate scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems


• Work with multithreading challenges and concurrent programming paradigms


• Drive cross-functional initiatives and collaborate with engineers, product managers, and technical program managers across teams


• Contribute to open-source communities and share experiences with the broader technology ecosystem


• Engage with technologies including Spark, Kafka, Flink, Druid, Iceberg, Presto/Trino, and cloud-native platforms

What You Bring

Essential Qualifications:

• 2+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems features or applications


• Proficiency in the design and development of RESTful web services


• Experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems


• Strong proficiency in Java or other object-oriented programming languages


• Comfort with multithreading and concurrent programming challenges


• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with big data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Flink, or similar frameworks


• Knowledge of cloud-native platforms and distributed database systems


• Familiarity with data warehousing solutions and ETL pipelines at scale


• Experience with open-source contributions or community engagement


• Understanding of microservices architecture patterns


• Experience with sub-millisecond latency systems


• Background in building systems for petabyte-scale data processing
