Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Distributed Systems Engineer (Level 4) to join our Data Platform team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about building robust, scalable, and highly available distributed systems that form the foundation of a world-class data infrastructure. In this role, you will work on challenging problems at massive scale, collaborating with talented engineers across multiple teams to deliver solutions that impact millions of users daily.

What You'll Work On

As a Distributed Systems Engineer at arenaflex, you'll have the opportunity to work on several specialized teams within our Data Platform organization. Your expertise will be crucial in one of the following areas:

Database Access Platform Team

Join the Database Access Platform team and build flexible query entry points that facilitate data abstractions to operate at sub-millisecond latencies while enabling microservices to more efficiently store, consume, and manage their data. This team holds significant responsibility in enabling microservices to meet their constantly growing and evolving data needs. You'll be passionate about distributed data systems technology, active in the open-source community, and believe in owning what you build. As part of a small team responsible for business-critical systems, you'll be committed to a culture of feedback and engineering excellence.

Data Platform Infrastructure Team

The Data Platform Infrastructure team serves as a platform for our internal data platforms. Our shared systems and tooling enable rapid advancement in providing state-of-the-art data and analytics systems across the organization without building custom platforms for each new system. You'll create high-impact infrastructure, control, and orchestration systems calibrated for running data systems at scale. Many of our tools and systems are written in Python, making this an excellent team if you enjoy working across multiple languages.

Data Ingestion and Processing Team

This team offers a self-service pipeline product to enable varied client personas to meet their low-latency data ingestion and processing requirements. You'll work on reflection throughout complex streaming structures like Kafka and Flink, offer a pattern-driven processing experience, and invest in operational automation, reliability, and tools for predictable data quality.

Big Data Compute Team

Be responsible for providing the cloud-native platform for distributed data processing. This team is critical to batch data processing in the Data Platform. It offers support for Spark, ETL data into petabyte-scale data warehouses, and access that data using Spark and Presto/TrinoDB. The team also provides sub-second latency for specific query classes using Druid. You'll tackle fascinating and challenging problems of working with data at scale, build features and performance improvements, and work closely with open-source communities to shape projects and make contributions.

Big Data Orchestration Team

Offer the platform for designing, organizing, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner. These platforms include essential services that have all ETL and ML jobs running on Big Data Systems at scale. These fully distributed systems are constantly evolving with cutting-edge technology. We're moving towards event-driven and intelligent orchestration that requires minimal user input.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain distributed systems that handle massive-scale data processing and storage


• Architect and build robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure


• Address real business needs at large scale by applying programming and analytical problem-solving skills


• Drive cross-functional initiatives and collaborate with engineers, product managers, and technical program managers across teams


• Contribute to open-source communities and share experiences through arenaflex OSS


• Work with technologies like Spark, Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg, Kafka, and Flink


• Build and operate scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems


• Design and implement RESTful web services


• Optimize system performance and ensure reliability at scale

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field


• 2+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems or applications


• Strong proficiency in the design and development of RESTful web services


• Experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems


• Strong programming skills in Java or another object-oriented programming language


• Comfort with multi-threading and concurrent programming challenges


• Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts, including consistency, partitioning, and replication


• Experience with cloud-native architectures and deployment

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Computer Science or related field


• Experience with big data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Flink, or similar frameworks


• Knowledge of data warehouse systems like Presto, Trino, or Hive


• Familiarity with real-time streaming systems and stream processing


• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (Kubernetes, Docker)


• Contributions to open-source projects


• Experience working in agile environments with continuous integration and deployment


• Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
