Position Overview

We are seeking a talented and motivated Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) to join our Data Platform team. In this role, you will help advance and grow our infrastructure as we pursue our ambitious goal of reaching 500 million subscribers worldwide. You will be instrumental in architecting and building robust, scalable, and highly available distributed systems that power arenaflex's entertainment ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Development: Architect and build robust, scalable, and highly available distributed systems and data infrastructure that support arenaflex's growing global subscriber base.

System Optimization: Optimize existing systems for performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency while maintaining high availability standards.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, product managers, and technical program managers across teams to drive cross-functional initiatives and deliver innovative solutions.

Open Source Contribution: Contribute to and engage with open source communities, sharing our experiences and adding value to Netflix OSS projects.

Code Ownership: Take end-to-end ownership of business-critical systems, ensuring quality, reliability, and operational excellence.

Technical Leadership: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.

Innovation: Research and evaluate new technologies, methodologies, and best practices to continuously improve our data infrastructure.

Incident Response: Participate in on-call rotation and resolve production issues with a focus on minimizing impact to subscribers.

Team Focus Areas

Database Access Platform

The Database Access Platform team builds and operates a flexible query gateway that facilitates data abstractions to work at sub-millisecond latencies while allowing arenaflex microservices to more efficiently store, consume, and manage their data. This team holds significant responsibility in enabling arenaflex microservices to meet their constantly growing and evolving data needs. Data Platform Infrastructure

The Data Platform Infrastructure team serves as a platform for our internal data platforms. Our shared infrastructure and tooling enable arenaflex to rapidly iterate on providing cutting-edge data and analytics systems to the rest of the organization without building custom platforms for each new system. We create high-impact infrastructure, control, and deployment systems customized for running our data systems at scale. Many of our tools and systems are written in Python, making this an excellent team if you enjoy working in multiple languages and tackling diverse technical challenges.

Data Ingestion and Processing

This team offers a self-service streaming pipeline product to enable diverse client personas across arenaflex to meet their low-latency data ingestion and processing requirements. They enable abstraction over complex streaming systems like Kafka and Flink, offer a graph-driven processing experience, and invest in operational automation, reliability, and tools for predictable data quality.

Big Data Compute

Responsible for providing the cloud-native platform for distributed data processing at arenaflex, this team is crucial to batch data processing in the Data Platform. They support Spark, ETL data into the petabyte-scale data warehouse, and provide access using Spark and Prino/Trino. The team also delivers sub-second latency for specific query classes using Druid. We're looking for exceptional talent with experience in Spark, Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg, and distributed database systems overall. This team tackles fascinating and challenging problems of working with data at scale, building features and performance improvements, and working closely with open source communities to shape projects and make contributions.

Big Data Orchestration

This team offers the platform for scheduling, organizing, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner. These platforms include foundational services that run all ETL and ML workloads on Big Data Systems at arenaflex. These fully distributed systems are constantly evolving at arenaflex scale with best-in-class technology. We're moving toward event-driven and intelligent coordination that requires minimal user input/intervention.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field

2+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems or applications

Proficiency in the design and development of RESTful web services

Experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems

Strong proficiency in Java or other object-oriented programming languages

Comfort with multi-threading and concurrent programming challenges

Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and system design

Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with big data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Flink, or similar frameworks

Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes

Knowledge of data storage systems including relational databases, NoSQL databases, and data warehouses

Understanding of data processing architectures and best practices

Experience with open source contributions or maintaining open source projects

Advanced degree in Computer Science or related field

Experience in the streaming media or entertainment industry
